I was making sure that my Dad was well and able to keep up with the group. He is not as good on his feet as he used to be, and walking the whole tour was a challenge for him. Still, he enjoyed it very much, and I'm glad he was there with us!Librarianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05704656564078750607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949425054295660529.post-61665758909666453022017-11-30T12:08:15.047+01:002017-11-30T12:08:15.047+01:00Were you not tempted to hide somewhere and spend t...Were you not tempted to hide somewhere and spend the night in the castle? I love this post and thank your sister for us for the photos. Wish I could see "your" castle!
LUX- thanks for letting me learn something new!
Oddly enough, I just spoke with my Dad last night and he was speaking of not having electricity in his home until he returned from Germany after his army service.
Also, there was no electricity in his school as he was growing up!Kay G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/07228498846814735537noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949425054295660529.post-91323341730452935342017-11-28T19:45:59.382+01:002017-11-28T19:45:59.382+01:00That's an interesting point, Kristi. For those of us who have to get up during the night to go to the bathroom, the advice often given is to use as little light as possible, in order to fall asleep again soon.Librarianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05704656564078750607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949425054295660529.post-18388464142729820272017-11-28T18:12:26.630+01:002017-11-28T18:12:26.630+01:00I am sure that must have been a fascinating tour. ...I am sure that must have been a fascinating tour. Life was certainly different when we had so little artificial light. I once read about the time when steam engines were built and the first locomotives were tried out in public, many believed those who'd ride at such enormous speed would go insane or die on the spot, because our bodies were not made for anything faster than a fast horse.Librarianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05704656564078750607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949425054295660529.post-32155101610981016342017-11-28T18:01:22.352+01:002017-11-28T18:01:22.352+01:00And yet, by all that we know, people were eager to...And yet, by all that we know, people were eager to find work at the palace; it was a question of prestige, and being at least fed and sheltered (and paid, even if just a little), as opposed to farming, which was not so well regarded and often kept people in dirt and poverty all their lives.

Thank you - it really is a spectacular building, inside and out :-)Librarianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05704656564078750607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949425054295660529.post-16709997220379015902017-11-28T17:34:17.862+01:002017-11-28T17:34:17.862+01:00I was once in Kensington Palace after closing time...I was once in Kensington Palace after closing time and it really was a thrill so I can imagine how lovely this tour was! I think that when people had to do things that involved close work after dark in the old days, they would have a candle close by, and sometimes if they were rich enough a magnifier. When electricity came in, some folk thought it would be bad for the eyes because nature never intended us to see such brightness all year round!
