Too Much of a Good Thing?

Can there be, as the saying goes, too much of a good thing? Yes, of course. One can have too many cocktails, too much chocolate, too many nights out, too long of playing one's favourite computer game, and so on. But I can never have too much of the good thing called YELLOW!

My first yellow dress I bought in, I think, 2007. It is still a firm favourite in my wardrobe, although I do not have as much occasion to wear it as I would like to. It is too low cut for work, and of a lightweight linen that needs really warm weather to feel comfortable. You can see that dress here, if you like.

There is now a second yellow dress in my wardrobe, a casual find when I happened to walk through H&M the other day. Does it happen to you, too, that you find the nicest things when you're not looking for anything?

I wrote about the many yellow items and how I prefer to combine them on my blog before; that older post is here

Last time I bought a new dress, it was this one in March. It may not look it, but it is one of my most expensive pieces. On the same day I bought the new yellow dress, I also found a top at H&M and a white summer jacket to wear to the office - the yellow dress, top and jacket together cost less than the March-dress alone. The jacket looks a bit large, but it is supposed to be my size, and a look at Comma's website tells me that it looks rather large on their model, too.

The polka dot top (just in case you didn't know - I love polka dots!) is not purple, but a deep navy blue; it is the camera that makes it look purple.

What I really "need" now (if one ever really "needs" clothes...) is a pair of white shoes smart enough for the office, and sturdy enough for the way to work, standing around at the train station and walking to and from there.

When I found the white jacket, I was with my sister. We had met in town for our first visit to the ice cream parlour of this year, it was a beautiful sunny and warm day. On our way home we stopped at that store. While browsing the clothes racks, we came across a collection of particularly ugly things. I forgot the name on the label, it was something "Royal...", but the only "Royal" thing about them was that they had evidently been designed by the King of Bad Taste!

My sister persuaded me to put them on just for the laugh, and took these pictures with her mobile. We had such fun, and I just can't believe someone is willing to spend money on this stuff and really wears it in public! The 80s Revival is over... such outfits did not look good the first time round, and even less so now.
If I ever should be invited to a Bad Taste Party, I'd know where to look for an outfit :-D

Speaking of 80s outfits, I found this yellow retro sweater at Aldi's a month or two ago. It is my favourite outfit for days spent at home doing the cleaning and ironing, very cosy and roomy.

  1. Hello Meike,

Well, hello yellow! Your sunshine choices certainly would brighten up any day in the office or anywhere else for that matter. The dress looks very good on you but then, you have such a fabulous shape that you could look good in anything.

As you say the horrors of 1980 'fashion' do not merit a revival but you have such great legs........perhaps you should air them more frequently!

    1. Hello Jane and Lance,
My legs are aired plenty as soon as temperatures (and occasion) allow. At the moment, that is not the case, and so today I am all covered up in a very modest pair of jeans and baggy sweater (in yellow... just in case you were wondering).

  2. I too like yellow, but I have to pick the right shade or I end up looking washed out. Your yellow dresses are lovely. In fact, I like all the outfits you have bought.
Whilst I wouldn't want either of the bad taste outfits, they actually look good on you because you have a fantastic figure.

    1. Yes. there is yellow and yellow... my favourite is the daffodil kind, while I am normally not too keen on the more lemony type. I do hope that I do not look too washed out in any of my yellow outfits :-)

  3. Yes, you would actually look good in anything Meike. I don't have anything in yellow, well except for a very skimpy top which I would only wear on very hot days in the back garden. I wear trousers ALL the time, so I do admire your fashion choices.

Trousers are certainly very comfortable, but what about the very hot day you mentioned? Nothing beats a lightweight summer dress on such a day!

  5. What fun, Meike! I love the cheerfulness of your yellow dresses! Especially at this time of year. I know you haven't had such a winter as we did, but here we need anything that reminds us of sunshine! You are lucky to have such a great figure, and a wonderful smile. I think you need to smile more when you are photographed!

That white outfit is rather unbelievable! At least it is good for a laugh.

    1. Haha, yes, the white dungarees were so ugly we just couldn't believe it! (The white t-shirt underneath is actually my own.)
One simply can't feel glum in a yellow dress, I think.

    2. Forgot to say that I am always a bit hesitant to smile openly in front of a camera because I do not like my large and crooked front teeth.

  6. I love yellow (I wore yellow silk vietnamese pyjamas when I was the mother of the bride!!)

Too much of a good thing? Works for everything except books!

    1. Oooh!! Yellow silk vietnamese PJs sound wonderful! I love silk, it's the best feeling on your skin fabric-wise, along with cashmere (depending on temperature and occasion, of course).

Maybe you have just not found the right shade of yellow for yourself.

  9. Not much yellow in my wardrobe - the other two dresses behind the yellow one are more common in my wardrobe (blue and magenta/purple). You look good in it though! :)

I took the photo with the other two dresses (both feature "properly" in older posts on my blog) because I thought the yellow would be set off nicely in contrast to the cobalt blue and the fuchsia/magenta shade.

  10. I love reading about your fashion finds, Meike. I don't wear much yellow, I'm afraid, though I love it -- but it's a colour which makes me like very sallow and ill. Not the effect I'm usually going for!! Love your new (even if expensive) colour-block dress. Very chic. Have a great weekend. xoxox

    1. Good to know my fashion posts are not too boring, Carol!
The colour-block dress wasn't expensive, I bought it last year but so far didn't have a jacket that would go well with it. It's the other dress, the one with the small pattern, that is new and was quite expensive.
You too have a great weekend!

  11. I just can't wear yellow as it makes me look washed out - unless it's a more mustard/gold shade, but it looks great on you. You've got great legs too - I'm not at all jealous...

Yellow comes in so many different shades that I am quite sure there is also one that would not make you look washed out. A pastel vanilla type maybe?

  12. I don't know much about fashion but speaking as a guy, I love your "Bad Taste" look. It made me gulp and then growl like a beast. Will you be modelling your underwear any time soon Arian? Such a post would attract an avalanche of hits!

    1. Underwear-modelling posts are not planned for the near future, YP - I do that only for a VERY limited audience!

  13. I echo what others have told you here, even the 80's outfits look good on you because you have such a nice figure but also, I love your laughing face in those photos, that makes them look even better on you!
I always like your fashion posts! That yellow dress is very pretty, I know you love the color but the style is just perfect on you!

    1. Thank you, Kay! It was a lot of fun trying these ugly outfits, I could not NOT laugh and just wish I could have completed the bad taste look with a pair of Cowboy boots or some other footwear that I would not want to be seen dead in :-D

  14. Wow - great legs! and although the bad taste stuff was not ideal to wear - the kjacket and shorts actually looked fun! What jumped out at me was a great smile, fantastic hair cut, and an image of youthful vibrancy that made you look like a very young woman!
We are so busy trying to dress right/ appropriately for age/work etc, that we need to remember to have fun. You looked like a really great person to go shopping with :)

  16. What a fun post!! Your new yellow dress is pretty - it looks like summer, doesn't it? I often find the best things when I'm not looking for something - maybe because I'm more relaxed then. And the bad-taste things - wow! :)

  17. You do have excellent taste in clothes. Colour in clothes can be a strange thing though. I know that you've talked of yellow before (I remembered the second post but, oddly, I seem to have missed the first). Have you gone through phases? I had always liked wearing daffodil yellow Prince of Wales check shirts and stronger yellow polo shirts and polo necked shirts. However I rarely do nowadays unless I'm wearing a sports jacket (which is even more rare). I used to wear a lot of deep green years ago. Now almost everything seems to be deep blue.

I seem to remember we've been talking about the colours you like to wear before, and I like you all the more for knowing that you, too, like(d) wearing yellow!

    2. The reason I don't wear yellow now is simply that I don't wear the clothes that compliment the colour these days. If I wear one of my Harris Tweed sports jackets then I will wear a yellow shirt (amongst others) and I have quite a few yellow ties but, again, I rarely wear ties these days. I shudder when I think that as a young man I used to wear a tie when I went climbing!
