What I Brought Back

In one of my many Yorkshire holiday posts, I have already mentioned that I brought back several dresses and a coat, as well as a pile of books my mother-in-law had set aside for me.

Here are the first two of the new dresses:

They are both from Ripon's Dorothy Perkins shop. The summery one was in the sale and cost only 8 pounds, the other one wasn't very expensive, either. The first two weeks back here after the holiday, it was still very warm during the day, so that I was able to wear the sleeveless dress already and did not have to wait until next summer. The other dress is warm enough to be worn quite a while yet, and it has very quickly become a favourite of mine for its very comfortable cut and crease-free fabric.

Meanwhile, it has become rather chilly; although on a day like yesterday, it still gets warm enough mid-afternoon for some sunbathing on my window sill, I have been wearing a coat (and seriously been thinking about gloves) in the mornings on my way to work.

So, I have for the first time in my life decided to take those items out of my wardrobe that I won't be wearing for the next half year or so, just so that everything I will be wearing has enough room and is easier to organize. Up until now, I've always had my complete wardrobe together, never separated anything, but it is so much nicer now (and gives me the illusion that I do not have too many clothes...). I only let go of four items which will be collected Tuesday morning by a charity organization who have put leaflets in everybody's mailboxes in my neighbourhood.

In order to make this post a bit more interesting, here are two views from my kitchen window:

The time of the year has come when I get to see sunrises - my kitchen window faces East. And that rainbow in the second picture was much more brilliant in reality; the camera couldn't capture it as beautiful as it really was.

    1. This view is one of the many things I love about my flat.

  3. They're both beautiful dresses. Here, I've been feeling winter is on its way for months, and only in the last few days have I begun to remember what summer is supposed to be like! It's been so wet that everything is bright green like early summer, even the leaves on the trees are hardly changing. It's been such a damp grey summer that I am hoping it will go on as long as possible.

    1. We had what will probably go down in history as the hottest summer "ever" - even topping the record summer of 2003 - so people are quite ready for colder weather here, I think. The leaves are already turning colour here, and chestnuts fall to the ground.

  4. The first dress is certainly summery! I love the second dress: very stylish. Rainbows can be very hard to photograph successfully. It is very enjoyable to see the sky from your windows. So many people cannot and I really feel for them.

    1. Thank you, Graham; I love the second dress, too. The first one I probably would not have taken if it had not been so cheap... it looks very nice on the dance floor.
Yes, my kitchen window view is something I enjoy very much, no matter the weather or season.

    1. Thank you! They were both good finds, I think.

  6. The dresses suit you. I rarely put things away for summer vs winter, except my thickest winter coats in summer. Many of my clothes are (more or less) the all-year-round kind, mostly a question of layers... Sometimes I reorganise the wardrobes a bit though (putting the off-season clothes further back etc).

    1. I've never done this before, because so far, there was enough room for everything in my wardrobe - but I seem to have acquired more items than I've got rid of over the past few years...
Like you, I have lots of stuff that I wear all year round, with or without additional layers according to the weather... but many of my dresses, tops, shorts and skirts are of the kind I can really only wear in summer.

    2. Same here, of course. Actually you inspired me, Meike... Followed your example today and took a bunch of the most summery items in my wardrobes down to the "fabric closet" in my storage room today (and took the winter coat up!) Only +5° this morning so realised that I'm not very likely to be wearing shorts, 3/4 length trousers or thin summer dresses again for a while...

    3. Nice to know my post managed to inspire you, Monica :-)
Yes, only 6C here right now (7:30), so I guess it will soon be time for The Coat...

  7. I love both dresses and you know I love the view from your kitchen window! And I love rainbows, I am happy that you shared yours!
And our house faces east also, people rave about sunsets but sunrises are just as beautiful!

    1. Thank you, Kay!
My flat has windows facing north, east and south, but none directly to the west, which makes it hard to watch a sunset properly from there. But my friend and I go running together once a week after work, and we've witnessed the most spectacular golden-pink sunset last week.

  8. I really like both of these dresses...It is difficult to choose a favorite and both look really good on you!

Here we are also having the days of extreme temperature swings. At night it is very chilly and takes a good time to warm up. Mornings are cold but in the later afternoon it is quite warm - for a while....

I love the local pictures, the beautiful sunrise and the rainbows.

Today I guess I shall be wearing gloves for the first time... I was trying to hold out until October, but the last few days I had really very cold hands by the time I arrived at work...

  9. Like the dresses and am eager to see the coat. I have a question for you ... who takes these photos of you modeling your clothing finds?

    1. Thank you, Jill! The mornings being as cold as they are already, I suppose it won't be long until The Coat will be introduced to the world :-)
My fashion photos are always done using the self-timer on my camera, there is nobody here who could take them for me.

  10. You look beautiful in both dresses, they really suit you. Every spring I wash and pack away the winter woolens, heavy coats and boots and get out the flipflops and sandals, and every autumn I do the opposite. I like it, it marks the beginning and end of a new season for me. x

    1. Thank you, Gillian! I wash my heavy winter coat, too, when I think I won't be needing it for many months. With shoes and boots, I don't change things around - I don't have that many pairs, so they can all stay where they are all year round.
I wonder how long it will take me next spring to iron all the packed away summer tops, skirts and dresses...!
