The Comfort Of Sunrise

My kitchen has two windows, and the one facing East is where I take all those pictures from that you get to see on my blog, in all seasons and all kinds of weather and time of day or night.

Some mornings, the sunrise is so beautiful it tugs at my heart the same way the cry of the buzzard does; it was like that about two weeks ago:

And even more spectactular on the next day:

Seeing such a glorious sunrise gives me comfort in a way I find difficult to explain, but maybe just looking at the picture makes you understand what I mean.

Anyway, this is what I see when coming into my kitchen on a sunny morning - doesn't that give anyone's mood an instant boost?

There's a new day every day, ready for me to fill it with work and play, pleasure and joy - or I could just be grumpy and miserable (which is the case very, very rarely).

  1. Hello Meike:
How wonderful to be able to enter such a light filled kitchen each morning, and we do agree that the views you have of the sunrise and sky are totally spectacular at all times.

Sadly our own kitchen window has no outlook but that of the 'area' between the buildings.

    1. Hello Jane and Lance,
it is also very nice to sit at that table with RJ on weekend mornings to enjoy a long and leisurely breakfast. And those gardens I look out on won't be built up anytime soon, which is a bonus.

    1. Usually at 7.00, Frances; before the clocks were set back, it was almost still dark by then.

  3. A lovely post and photos, Meike. I think morning sunshine in a kitchen is lovely and we're lucky to have it too.

  4. Lovely post. And I can relate to this because WE ARE HAVING THE FIRST SUNSHINE IN OVER A WEEK. It's been soooo dark and gloomy. but I mustn't complain because we had so few other effects from hurricane Sandy in our family. But looking out the window this morning and seeing sun coming from the east was a great joy!

    1. Not seeing sunshine in over a week would make anyone a bit gloomy, but you are right, what matters is that you were largely left unharmed by the hurricane. I don't understand how people can cope with the lack of light in areas where the sun is not to be seen for months on end!

  5. As the character Anne Shirley, of the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery used to day, "It's a new day, with no mistakes in it yet."

That clean slate, that time to start fresh, shines through the beautiful sunrise.

    Your kitchen is lovely.

    1. Thank you, Norma! The kitchen furniture was already there when I bought the flat; I only added the table and chairs and the smaller appliances such as microwave, kettle and coffee machine. It is not the kind of furniture I would have chosen, but it is neutral enough in style and colour not to bother me.

  7. What a great post! And what a great attitude. You are so right -- much of what happens in the day is the result of our mood. Thanks for sharing.

  10. OH YES sunshine always makes me smile! I use to sit on the floor of my living room after I sent all the children off to school, especially on a cold morning in the winter and I could ALWAYS count on the sunshine to blast through my living room window and warm up the room and me.....funny how I remember that specific thing when I saw your sunny kitchen. hmmmm???

    1. Linda, I have been sunbathing in my kitchen in spring, stretched out on a blanket on the floor - it felt like being caressed by the sun!

  11. I am so pleased that it's not just me that feels that way: that is to say it really tugs at the heart. I often stand at my kitchen window watching the sun rise over the mainland of Scotland over the Minch and could almost cry with the emotion I feel.

  12. I've got my own kitchen window facing north-east, I know what you mean... You've got a nice view there.
