Before Picking Up...

...my Yorkshire travel report again, let me show you the two walks I went on the 19th of June, one with my Mum and one on my own.
That day was yet another public holiday in my part of Germany; the last one until October. I really needed a break from studying, and there is nothing better to clear one's head than walking. So, off we went on the walk we have done many times before and like so much.

The weather was perfect for walking; a mix of sun and clouds, dry and warm, but not too hot. I am quite sure I took a picture of my Mum in her cool new sunglasses (the frame of course matching her outfit perfectly), but I can't find it and have no idea what happened to it.

After the walk from Marbach to Steinheim and up to the allotment, I stayed there for a while. As always when we arrange for this walk, my Dad had prepared the table and made coffee for us, and we had the muffins my Mum had made in the morning.

Walk No. 2 took me to the woods again; more or less the same area that I showed you pictures of in April in this post

By now, it all looked rather different, with a lot more leaves, none of the spring flowers left on the ground, and the fields much grown (and way too dry for the season).

The grassy path which is my favourite (see the post mentioned above for comparison) and hardly ever is really dry, not even in summer, had cracks and the grass was more yellow than green.

It was a good walk, just what I needed. On the Friday, I worked only in the morning and spent the afternoon studying again, and on the Sunday, I left for Ulm, as my previous post shows.

There will be one or two book reviews next, and then I hope to be getting back to posting about our Yorkshire holiday.

  1. Hello Meike,

You obviously find the countryside walks very restorative. It is so good when one finds a particular way of relaxing and then can return to it often. It is like having a good conversation with a best friend.

The landscape is constantly changing and it is good to see it in all its moods and lights. The small nuances then become noticeable and make a connection between oneself and the seasons, something which easily passes one by if one works indoors.

    1. Hello Jane and Lance,
I do indeed find walking the best way for me to relax, apart from staying home with a good book. Sometimes I regret that, when at my customer's office, I can not send my lunch break outdoors, but I always make sure I get enough walking in either on my way home from work or on the weekend.

  2. I notice there were black bulls in the penultimate picture! They're thinking - come on in Miss Arian! Or maybe they were cows - no difference. They also like to trample ramblers. Sounds like you have got your blogging activity planned for the next six months!

    1. They were cows, and they had calves with them. When I came too close to the fence for their liking, where the calves were, they all looked at me as if to say "Think carefully before you get any closer, lady!"
Yes, my blogging backlog will last quite a while, and there's more activities lining up this month and the next which I want to blog about, too.

  3. All work and no play makes Meike a dull girl.
I do so agree there is nothing than a good walk in open countryside to blow away the cobwebs.
You can study again later and when you’ve been refreshed the work becomes lighter.

    1. Exactly! I get back to my desk in a much more receptive state of mind after I've been out for a while.

  4. I love reading about your family custom of ending walks at your family allotment where your father has made coffee and you have something delicious afterwards......The ground looks so dry and cracked. Nothing like that around here yet...It's been a rather wet year and things are looking almost too lush.

    1. Hopefully, we'll be able to do such walks for many more years to come!

  5. Like Kristi above, I love the idea of your walk ending with your Dad's coffee and your Mom's homemade muffins.
"Not too hot", that is a blessing for us in Georgia at this time of year. We are having the most incredible weather, it is in the 60's in the morning and today there is a slight breeze with low humidity. This is UNHEARD of this time of year and Richard even called it "perfect" weather! Too bad he has to work today, but he will be off tomorrow, so you know we will hit the trails very early!!)

    1. Don't forget to take your camera tomorrow! (I know you won't)
I like hot weather and usually don't mind the heat, but when I am working and am supposed to look smart at the office, I prefer it a bit cooler, too (no air condition in any of our offices).
Today was an "on and off" day with lots of rain, so I stayed home, but maybe tomorrow will be less rainy and I can go for a walk again as well.
