October Skies

...and a celebration: The day after our misty walk, Sunday, October 17, O.K.'s village celebrated its patron saint, St. Gallus. I have written about Gallus and what the celebration involves two years ago; click here if you wish to (re-)read that.

Because of the pandemic, there had been no Gallus fest last year, but this year, restrictions were lifted enough to allow for the customary concert on the square between the church and the vicarage.

For church services, restrictions still apply, so that not as many people as usual could attend. This was also reflected in the number of people who remained on the square after mass, to have something to eat and drink and listen to the village band. Plus it was rather cold and humid (not raining, though), meaning some cut their stay short and went to their warm homes for their Sunday dinner early.

Still, it was a pleasant couple of hours or so, and I chatted to several people, the vicar among others. After their performance, the musicians had their share of food that had been kept aside for them, and something to drink.

We were home in time for mugs of steaming hot coffee (very welcome!) and cake before later setting off for a walk around the village.

The following pictures span the week from Oct. 18 to 22. Much of that week was sunny and unseasonably warm; on the Wednesday, the thermometer reached 20C - warm enough for many to go about in short sleeves!

My little autumn corner has a new addition, a hand-made covered notebook bought at the village market.

After-work walk on the 20th; it was ten to six pm there.

Another after-work walk on the 22nd; just after six pm.

By the weekend, temperatures dropped considerably, but it was still pleasant enough for us to explore a circuit I had read about in my local paper. That will be the subject of my next post.

  1. Notebooks with hand-made covers are quite the thing in that they are not, like many generic ones, quite so easily mislaid.

    1. The lady who made them had several more that I liked enough to buy them - either to give as presents or to use myself.

  2. I was glad to read your previous post as I forgot that O.K. plays in the village band! It is nice that they could have the festival this year. I love your photos of the October sky - soon here we will change our time (Fall back) so it will be dark early. I used to hate coming home from work in the dark but now that I am retired, it doesn't bother me too much! :)

    1. The clocks were turned back to normal time here last night. Now sunset is at 5:00 pm and will be earlier every day until December 21… it‘s the natural way of things, but it means I won‘t be able to go on after work walks in daylight for many months.

  3. I've been catching up on your holiday posts this morning as I've only just returned from my own two week holiday in the UK. Happy you had so many lovely hikes/walks and decent weather (for the most part) during your time in the mountains. Love the October light photos.

  4. I love the covered notebook you purchased! You have somewhat of a theme of foxes in your home don't you? I love them all. The night sky from your kitchen has a Halloween look to it, perfect for the season.

    1. Yes, I love foxes, and the painting was made by Neil (Yorkshire Pudding). I even have a cardigan, a pair of ear studs and a necklace sporting foxes!

  5. Plenty of people forget to look up at the ever-changing sky above. It is awesome and free and often puts earthly things into proper perspective.

    1. Since childhood, I have had a thing for beautiful skies. It is so important for my wellbeing that I can see the sky and not feel closed in too much.

    1. Me too! I nearly always make sure to look at the night sky from my kitchen window last thing before I go to bed.

    1. Thank you! We‘re not celebrating Halloween, but we are going to have a beautiful Sunday nonetheless :-)
Yes, the sky looks never the same one hour (or even minute) to the next. Never boring!

  8. I like your autumn decorations. I have a chest where I change decorations with the seasons, I have no foxes but I have some owls :)
