Roses are NOW!

And they come in (almost) all colours, as you can see from the pictures I took yesterday afternoon at the park:

Yesterday afternoon? Park? On a Wednesday? Yes - I decided to stop working at around 3.00 pm (I was working from home that day); all the tasks I had set myself for the day were finished, and it was simply gorgeous out there! So I grabbed my camera and went out.

I had difficulties finding any purely white roses; there were a few but they were hidden quite well behind green leaves, and I did not want to step into the flower beds (you simply don't do that at the park) to get close enough for a decent picture.
Of course I am aware that there is an almost infinite variety of colours for roses, but these were the ones I saw (and smelled!) yesterday.

Is anyone else reminded of these paintings, or is it just me?

Oh, and of course there's not just roses there at the park - I could have taken hundreds of pictures of all sorts of beautiful flowers. These poppies I found particularly striking:
They were huge, and I can't remember having seen poppies in that particular part of the park before.

I walked on after that (altogether, I walked for almost 2 1/2 hours) and visited a place I had not been to in a long time, but that will have to wait for another post.

  1. Every summer I resolve to get loads of rose trees come November and plant them. I usually forget, I am afraid, although I did plant 2 a couple of years ago, and they were disappointing. Bah! I am such a rubbish gardener but it is not through want of trying.

Luckily we live near Regents Park because there are acres of wonderful roses there and a rose garden. The potted rose on my balcony has come out, it's one of the most beautiful I know and also has a wonderful scent, I got it years ago at a National Trust shop and it is quite happy in its pot with minimum attention from this hopeless gardener!

    1. Minimum attention is what I am looking for in any plant that is supposed to survive my "care" of it, too, Jenny - I am an even worse gardener than you, I guess.

  2. Wow, those are some incredible roses! And I love the poppies too. The roses and the poppies remind me of England.
So glad you were able to get out on such a beautiful afternoon!

  7. I love roses and my Dad grew beautiful ones. The soil on Lewis is totally anathema to roses though (and the salt-laden wind doesn't help either) so it's one flower I gave up one after a year or so of moving to Lewis. Whilst I was away last week I was marvelling at the fabulous displays of huge poppies this year in Scotland.

    1. I didn't know roses don't grow well on Lewis, but what you say makes sense. At least you can look at these now :-)
