The 2nd day of a new month, already October... So far, there is no notable difference to the last few days of September. But soon, it will get darker earlier and earlier, and I will really have to wear gloves on my way to work, and turn the heating on a bit more.
The following pictures were actually taken while it was still September, but the place (you recognized it, of course, as I've shown you round Ludwigsburg's palace grounds so often) does not look much different now:
Yesterday, the 1st of October, was gloriously golden. The sunshine meant we had about 20 Celsius in the afternoon, but the morning was rather cold at 6 Celsius. Leaving the office, I wished I had my camera with me, because there are some trees and shrubs around the building that look very beautiful right now in their autumn colours.
The last picture is from the annual pumpkins exhibition.
Lovely colors.....Ours are not quite so advanced....
ReplyDeleteWe have sunflowers, but the Chinese Lanterns are not so orange.
ReplyDeleteIt may have something to do with the extremely hot and dry summer we've had. And because of last year's very mild winter, everything here was about 4 weeks ahead already in spring.
DeleteIn reality, the colours were even more brilliant; the light wasn't perfect for the camera.
Pumpkins are beginning to appear on our markets here in Sicily too.
ReplyDeleteThey've been in the groceries departments of our supermarkets for about 10 years now, too, and there is hardly a restaurant or even café where you don't find pumpkin soup on the menue anymore :-)
DeleteHi Meike, I love your pics of the gardens, we have pumpkins for sale at the markets now in Mississippi, too. I really like that plant, Chinese Lanterns, I just planted a piece of that in my flower bed, I hope it lives.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dorothy! Yes, I'd love to have a few stems of the lantern plant in a vase in my flat, but there aren't any in the garden around my house.
DeleteThe pumpkins exhibition - it really does look (and from previous pics you have posted) as if it is worth travelling a long way to see!
ReplyDeletePeople do come by the busload from all over the south of Germany and Switzerland, and I am glad they do - they are welcome to spend some money in my hometown. But I'd never travel a long way (or pay extra money) to see a pumpkin exhibition, to be honest... I love the park as it is, without all the extra stuff in it.
DeleteWow, that pumpkin arrangement looks impressive. I like the 'Japanese lanterns' in the first picture too - at least that's what we used to call them here, in my childhood we had some in our garden. I don't remember them as quite that strong in colour either but that may be because mum used to dry them and use them for indoors decoration (and then of course the colour fades).
ReplyDeleteI'd love to have some in a vase here, or a branch of rosehips. Every time I am out walking, I look for one to take home, but haven't found the right one yet.
DeleteI always enjoy your annual pumpkin festival and there are still lots of flowers everywhere because, here anyway, everything was so late. I still have early summer flowers flowering in my garden. As for the nights drawing in I was upset this morning to realise that I was going to have to put the light on when I got up. Winter is upon us and for the second year (how time flies) I shall not be escaping the cold and dark by moving to New Zealand for their summer.
ReplyDeleteYour second winter on Lewis already! I didn't realize...
DeleteYes, I need the light on in the bathroom, too; not yet in the kitchen, as the window faces east and is much bigger as the one on the bath.
