Another Summer Gone

Meteorologically speaking, summer ends today. Here, the weather matches this transition; it was chilly, grey and rainy all day, similar to last Saturday. I spent last weekend at OK's, and it felt strange having to think about socks and coats after we had not needed any of that for months.

Saturday late afternoon, the sun came out, and we went for a walk before it was time for dinner. I took this picture from a hill above the village, looking west across a field of sunflowers:

The end of August and beginning of September to me always feels a little like entering a very different part of the year. I get nostalgic and melancholic and want to keep summer just a little longer, while at the same time I very much look forward to the colours and abundance of autumn.

One year ago today, I wrote this and found it rather interesting to re-read and remember. This year, again August was a very busy month for me, but finally, I am on holiday starting now!

Next week, OK and I will drive to the Bavarian Forest, a National Park on the border between Germany and the Czech Republic. We love walking and hiking, as you know, and neither of us has ever been in that region, so we shall explore it together.
You can find out more about the National Park here on wikipedia.

Right now, it does not yet feel like being on holiday; I am rather knackered after a full working week but will be going out for a meal with my friends in a bit. We've not met as this particular group in quite a while, so I am looking forward to it and just hope I'll stay awake long enough and won't end up with my head on the table!

    1. Thank you, I did, although it was VERY noisy in that restaurant. My choice was a Cesar salad with a large filet of red snapper on top, very tasty but way too much for me.

  2. Enjoy your holiday! I will have to ask my Bavarian sil about that National Park which I didn't know about.
And what a wonderful photograph that is of a field of sunflowers at sunset!

    1. OK and I have a "thing" for evening light, and were so glad the weather that had kept us indoors most of the day brightened up late afternoon to allow us that walk.

  3. That photo is so beautiful that I made it the screensaver on my computer! I hope you don't mind. :) Have a wonderful holiday and take lots of pictures! This is Labor Day weekend here in the U.S. which is a three day weekend. It's very much needed after the first two weeks of our students being back at school! I'm worn out and look forward to catching up on some rest.

    1. My photo as a screensaver on your computer? I am well chuffed :-) (meaning I feel honoured, in case you are not familiar with the expression)
A 3-day-weekend sounds good and I can imagine how welcome it is after the first intense weeks of the new school year.

  4. 'The Bavarian Forest' sounds wonderful - I know you and OK will have a great time. You mentioned socks and coats - I can hardly wait to wear both!!!

    1. I think we will too, Mary!
Coats and socks are definitely not my favourite items of clothing ;-)

  5. I went and looked at your post from last year and that was where you showed us the blue potatoes that your Dad had grown. Did he also grow them this year? Nothing better than digging up potatoes, home grown are the best.
Now, when you are in that forest next week, if you should happen upon a gingerbread house, DO NOT eat it! (Might I be the only one who would think of Hansel and Gretal?)

    1. This year, my Dad did not plant the blue potatoes. He could not plant all that much anyway, what with various health limits and the extreme heat and draught here. But we did have "tons" of small yellow plums (we call them Mirabellen), and there are apples.
He he, I will remember your advice if we come across a gingerbread house!

    2. Oh dear, just noticed I spelled Gretel incorrectly. I do know how to spell, just not a good typist or proofreader! P.S. Don't tell Richard or Christopher! :-)
Sorry your Dad didn't get to plant his potatoes. My Dad also can't do his big vegetable garden anymore. He misses it.

    1. Thank you, Monica! Two good hikes already - one to the top of the highest mountain in the National Park, the other one (to get started) a more gentle one.

  7. What an evocative and beautiful photo to farewell summer. Meanwhile in Melbourne we greet a changeable Spring.

    1. We are in the middle of that wonderful time, Graham! WiFi is a little shaky here so I can‘t do my usual blog reading round in the mornings, or do some „live“ blogging. But there will be plenty of trees and mountains in upcoming posts!

    1. We have returned from the Bavarian Forest on Thursday afternoon and are spending the last few days of our holiday together at my place. It will be strange going back to my single household everyday life on Monday, after we have been together 24/7 for two weeks.
