Coburg

As promised in my previous post, here are my pictures of Coburg, mainly of the fortress (Veste Coburg). I did neither go on a guided tour nor read all the information displayed on or near the various buildings, therefore I can't tell you anything about its history or what each of the buildings were for, but if you want to know the facts and figures, click here for the wikipedia article.

Coming up to the fortress and through the tunnel:
A beautiful place, and they even have their own resident dragon:
View from the walls. What you can see there between the trees is the aerodrome, where we had just landed and where our plane was patiently waiting for our return.
A lavender field - with and without a Librarian. The scent and the humming of the bees made me feel as if I were in the South of France.
The sheer size was amazing - there seemed to be yet another archway to go through, yet another corner to turn, yet another courtyard to discover.
In town, I only took a few pictures, as there would have been too many people on them. The first one is approaching the market square, and the second of the top of the Stadthaus (not the town hall, although I first thought so).
These two were taken from where we were sitting and having coffees and cold drinks before getting a taxi to take us back up the hill to where we had parked the plane:
My overall impression of Coburg was that of a beautiful town, very well cared for and with plenty to see and do. Definitely worth a longer visit at some stage.

  1. Oh yes. It is certainly a very beautiful town, and with that glorious blue sky! I am very tempted to visit now.

  2. It is beautiful, although I think I remember mostly the home of our relative! So I am happy to see your photographs. And, though it is not a landmark, I love the photo of you with the lavender which I love!

    1. Thank you, Kristi! I love lavender, too. It is amazing what a difference just one shrub of lavender can make; there is one in front of O.K.'s cottage, too.

  3. Oh, this was very interesting to me, because I have clear memories of visiting Coburg a few years ago - I think in 2012 - just before Christmas! So I remembered all the places but they seemed so very different, as you can imagine. My memories of looking around the castle include it being dark and cold outside but with views of the lit up town. The Christmas market, and the extraordinary wax bust of Prinz Friedrich Josias of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in the fortress, eerily lifelike! And there was also a charming doll museum in one of the old houses in the centre of town. It looks as if you had delightful weather, and it would be lovely to return. Oh, and if you return I do recommend the marvellous display of Queen Victoria's annual reminiscences, which believe it or not she wrote out each year herself but then had illuminated by a scribe! Of course she spent time in COburg with her most exceptional husband Prince Albert.

    1. Thank you for telling me more about Coburg's attraction. A doll museum sounds indeed charming, and I can well imagine how picturesque the fortress and town must be at Christmas time.

    1. That dragon came as a bit of a surprise! There were more sculpture dotted around the courtyard, but I didn't find them interesting or beautiful enough for wanting them on my pictures. The dragon, however, was something else.
