For various reasons, O.K. and I have been going on holiday together every year in May and September, and this year is no exception. However, while we have been spending most of our holidays in the mountains of Austria, Bavaria or northern Italy, this time we have decided to discover new grounds. Inspired by the pictures and reports we have seen and heard from family and friends, we are now spending almost two weeks in the Mosel region, in another federal state of Germany than our home state, but not all that far away really.
The Mosel is a river winding its way between high and steep slopes covered in vineyards and forests. Proud castles and picturesque towns line the way. The area is famous for its wines.
On Sunday (September 14), we loaded O.K.‘s car with our suitcases and bags and left Ludwigsburg at about a quarter to 12.
For the roughly 260 km, the navigation system estimated a drive of 2 hours 45 minutes. We ended up in a traffic jam on the motorway around Alzey, however, which added another hour to our journey, and arrived in the small town of Münstermaifeld at about 3:45 pm.
The town is 5 km away from the river, up on a large fertile area (a „field“, hence the „feld“ part in the town‘s name). It is full of historical buildings, but people live and work there - it‘s not merely a stop for tourists.
For the first five days of our holiday, we have rented a holiday flat in one of the historic houses (built in 1743) near the minster. For a long time, it has been a school, but in the 1990s, a family bought it and renovated the rundown building beautifully with much love for detail. They live on the upper floor, whith the ground floor being the holiday let.

At first, we unpacked only a few things and then went to explore the town.
For dinner, we had a meal at a restaurant which was good but not so good that we‘ll be returning. We have a fully equipped kitchen, after all.
I remember the Mosel valley as a beautiful area, and I hope you'll also be blessed with good weather for your holiday! (Raining here now...)
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed beautiful here. The weather is mixed so far, but on our second hike today we caught a shower only on the last kilometer, and of course we had rain gear in the rucksack.
DeleteYour holiday flat looks lovely. Hope you have great weather and a wonderful time, Meike.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ellen! See my reply to Monica regarding the weather 😊
DeleteLooks great. Have a good time. Looking forward to your pictures.
ReplyDeleteThank you! There‘ll be loads of pictures, soon.
DeleteEnjoy your holiday, missed weather regardless.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I don‘t mind mixed or even „bad“ weather; what matters to a holiday is getting up when I want to and not when I have to, not having to be at meetings and doing tasks on a deadline, but doing things when and if I want to do them. And if I just want to sit and read all day because it‘s raining, that‘s just as good as being out on a walk or hike on a nicer day.
DeleteWow, it is all so pretty! And I don't blame you, that place where you are staying looks fantastic! When I first started reading your post, I called out to Richard, isn't Mosel where they have the great wines? And he said, "Oh, yes!". (And then, of course, you told me so too!) Have a nice glass of wine and think of me. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteI was indeed thinking of you yesterday, but not in connection of wine - we were walking on a grassy path between fields, and from afar I saw two large trees oberhanging the path, meeting in the middle, and it looked a bit like a big heart 😊
DeleteOh, that must have been beautiful! ❤️ Hope you got a picture!
DeleteI did, and it will appear in one of my next posts - but only I thought it looked like a heart, O.K. didn‘t think so 😊
DeleteHello Librarian, I love your post and I always enjoy what you share here
DeleteHello Arthur, thank you - and welcome to my blog! If I am not mistaken, this is your first comment here. I‘ll return the visit in a minute.
