It is Sunday, 30 August as I am typing this, and in a couple of hours O.K. and I will be off on our way to Austria for a bit more than a week of hiking in the mountains. Once there, I might not be inclined or have the opportunity for much blogging (reading and commenting or writing), so you know why if you don‘t see me around much for a bit.
On Monday (24 August) I returned from my husband‘s as usual. My first job of the day was to check on Neo the cat and the two rabbits. They had survived the weekend without me very well, but it was obvious that Neo was more interested in his breakfast than in getting cuddled. We did that in the evening, though, after I‘d been for an after-work walk to Asperg.
Working from home on Tuesday (25 August), I found it so chilly in my flat that for the first time in months I made myself a cup of tea mid-morning, just to warm up! It felt quite nice, really.
Later, I went to see my Mum. On the way home from my Yorkshire holiday, one of the wheels on my suitcase had split, and for our upcoming holiday I wanted a new one. Knowing that my Mum‘s attic is a treasure trove of all things imaginable, instead of going into town to buy a new suitcase I asked Mum if I could have a look at the ones in the attic. I chose a large suitcase and an almost as large bag, both with a handle and wheels; as I travel a lot by train, I need to be able to transport my luggage from my home to the station, then there are often rather long stretches to walk on the large stations where I change trains, and sometimes from one station to the other, such as in Paris and London.
On Wednesday (26 August) I worked at the office as usual. Neo wasn‘t there when I went offer to feed and clean, but he had been eating his food.

Early morning, a thunderstorm had passed through, with very strong wind in its wake. When I arrived at the neighbours‘ house, I found several potted plants blown over, as well as the umbrella that stands next to the rabbit hutch to protect it from the worst of the sun. Much to my shock, one of the flaps to the hutch was open, and one of the two rabbits was sitting outside!!
I approached him very slowly and talked to him as I usually do when feeding the rabbits or cleaning their hut, getting ready to grab him if necessary, not knowing of course whether I‘d succeed or just scare him away. I said: „Hello Oskar, what are you doing out here? Don‘t you want to go back in? I‘ll bring fresh food…“ And guess what - he turned round and hopped back inside!
Quick as a flash, I slammed the flap shut and checked on the lock; it wasn‘t broken but probably the umbrella‘s stand knocked it open when it fell. I nearly cried with relief!! Oskar‘s sister Daisy had been in the outside enclosure all the time. Phew!!
Late afternoon I went back, and this time Neo was home, too. He ate a lot and then went out.
I met my Mum and my sister at the pub for a good-bye-drink in the evening.
Afterwards, I went to check on the animals once more, accompanied by my sister, who took this picture of me and Neo.I got up early-ish on Saturday (29 August) and of course first thing made sure Neo, Oskar and Daisy had all they needed. Their family was going to return from their holiday later that day.
Next, I packed my things, choosing the bag and leaving the large suitcase in the basement. Just after 10:30, I left for the station. Three different trains took me to Offenburg. It was adventurous in that my original connection was cancelled, and then the alternative connection fell through, too. I had to make an entirely new booking last minute, but eventually it worked out and I was in Offenburg at around 2:00 pm.
In the evening, the five of us (my mother-in-law, sister-in-law + husband, O.K. and I) went to a restaurant in the next village for a meal to celebrate my mother-in-law‘s birthday; she had turned 86 earlier in the week. The food and drink were good, and it was a nice, relaxing start of our holiday for us.

I hope you enjoy your holiday in Austria. I bet the person who donated that skirt in Ripon had little idea it would end up so far away in Germany! We often have a Nigerian customer in the charity shop I volunteer in who buys loads of clothes to sell at a market in Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteWe are really enjoying the holiday, thank you!
DeleteThe original owner certainly didn‘t think her skirt would travel that far. It was a lucky find for me!
A Big Storm Knocked It Over. Laurie Colwin's last novel, one of her wittiest.
ReplyDeleteThat thunderstorm & big wind knocked over the plants & umbrella stands.
The rabbits could have wandered away further. You got there right on time.
Three trains to Offenburg ; I imagine big stations. Do they have refreshment rooms ?
I'm reading John Wain's The Smaller Sky, about a man who lives in Paddington Station.
He's dropped out and spends his days on the platforms, boarding in the station hotel.
Published in 1967. I like country railway stations, but to live in one ?
A week or more walking in the Austrian Mountains : A great getaway for you and O.K.
Be safe and happy. Bring back photos of the green pastures and chalets.
The stations where I usually have to change on my trips to and from Offenburg are fairly big (Stuttgart and Karslruhe) but not as huge as Munich, Frankfurt or Hamburg, for instance. Refreshments can be bought at all of them, left right and centre, but everything is ridiculously expensive, even just a half liter of bottled water goes for around 3 €. That‘s one reason why I always travel with my own flask, filled with perfectly good tap water from home.
DeletePhotos of gree pastures, blue skies and high mountains are already accumulating on my phone!
I'm impressed at how cool, calm, and collected you are when trains are canceled or delayed and you quickly make alternate plans. I'd be so frantic!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful holiday with your husband, Meike!
Thank you, Ellen!
DeleteThere isn‘t much I can do when things go wrong with trains; I can only hope that there will be a reasonably convenient alternative to be found via the app on my phone or with the help of staff (who use the same apps as us passengers and know hardly more than we do). It happens more often than not, so that an entirely smooth journey is truly remarkable.
That's quite a responsibility looking after two rabbits and a cat. I'm so glad the rabbit didn't escape far. Have a wonderful holiday.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteMost people would say there isn‘t much to it, looking after my neighbours‘ three pets, compared to looking after farm animals. But them not being mine, of course I want ro make extra sure they are well looked after when their owners aren‘t there.
My relief at Oskar returning inside without a problem was immense!
Sounds like you are a rabbit whisperer ? Have a good holiday
ReplyDeleteWendy in York
Thank you, Wendy!
DeleteI was very lucky in that it was Oskar, who is a calm, sedate rabbit. His sister Daisy can be quite aggressive (no kdding!) and is more adventurous, but fortunately she was nowhere near the open hatch.
What a fright about the rabbits! Thank goodness Oskar wasn't more adventurous in his roaming!
ReplyDeleteHis sister Daisy would not have been persuaded to go back inside so easily, I am sure of that!
DeleteWhat a pretty skirt and outfit! Glad Oskar was easily caught and out back safely. Enjoy Austria! I'm sure you'll take lots of great photos to share.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jennifer!
DeleteThankfully, I did not need to catch Oskar, he hopped back inside when I approached him and talked to him. Photos are becoming more by the hour, almost!
Oh, I love your charity shop skirt! It suits you! More fashion photos, I like pretty clothes! (Remembering your wedding photos!) And glad you got the rabbit back in. You are a rabbit whisperer! Have fun hiking in Austria! Will you sing "Climb Every Mountain"? I would!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kay! I‘m glad I found this skirt, and at only 7 £ and in pristine condition it was a real bargain, too. Oskar went back in as soon as I approached him, I didn‘t need to do anything - but believe me, I made doubly sure that hatch was locked behind him!
DeleteI‘m afraid I don‘t have enough breath left to sing when I‘m going up those mountains 🤣
We have more leaves on the ground now as well - and have had some similar skies too!
ReplyDeleteNext week will be the middle of September, and it's been quite windy here; we have returned from our holiday in Austria a couple of hours ago and find it already much more autumnal than when we left. Very welcome to me :-)
