Something About Work

My job does not feature all that often here on my blog, but every now and then, I find it worth mentioning. Since December 2012, I have been working in the area of IT security and data protection, but our customers often ask me to support them with tasks that have little or nothing to do with either, and I enjoy the diversity of projects I've been involved with over the past few years.
So far, the only time I have showed you where I spend most of my working week was here.

This year, our biggest customer (the one who provided us with the room shown in the older post) has made some changes. Someone else moved into our old office, and the three of us were transferred from the 4th to the 1st floor.

The new room will be a lot less hot in summer - sometimes it was almost unbearably hot up there, with temperatures well over 30 Celsius this summer and no air conditioning, still wearing business outfits of course.

From my place at the window (and very close to the heating, which is what I wanted), I can see the roof of the ground floor part of the building where some large conference rooms, the kitchen and the canteen are located. The roof is planted with lavender and other plants, which is much nicer than just plain concrete.

Everything else is the same - our desks, chairs and computers were moved for us. We like the new room, and not once have I accidentally walked up to the 4th floor out of habit.

What matters most to me in my work environment is that it is tidy, clean and clutter-free. My boss (RJ) and our friend & colleague are, thankfully, the same as I in that respect.

(These pictures were taken at the start of September, right after my holiday, when it was still very warm here - now, I wouldn't dream of wearing a sleeveless dress to work!)

  1. This is amazing. I could never work in such a sterile environment. I like stuff all over the place, on the floor, on chairs, everywhere. I even had to move stuff to type this and the dogs are sharing their bed with a camera lens.

    1. There simply is not enough physical stuff to work with in my job - nearly everything I do happens somewhere on the customers' servers...
Also, the office does not "belong" to us; we could be out there in 5 minutes if the customer decided they wanted to get rid of us. That is one more motivation to not bring much personal stuff to the work place.

    1. Thank you! I really like the new room. We have a little less space than before, but all things considered, it's better now.

  3. I've decided that tidiness is inbuilt. But sadly, not in me. I think I'm probably half way between you and Adrian, Meike. I'd love to be tidy - theoretically - but I just don't care enough.

    1. It may be inbuilt in some, but it wasn't in me - just ask my Mum, she will tell you a thing or two about what my room often looked like when I was a kid!
Nowadays, I simply can not relax when I am in a room full of "stuff" and disorder (when it is my responsibility; I don't care much about how tidy or untidy someone else's place is).

  4. I'm so glad you have been moved to a better office space! But I am more like Frances. Still, when I was working there was not clutter in the work space.

    1. There is just no reason why our office should be cluttered. We do not really produce anything physical, but nearly everything we do happens on the computer, so: no papers, books, files and folders needed, no pens other than one or two to scribble a note while on the phone, or a text marker when we're proof-reading something.
It is certainly different for those who have a different kind of job.

  6. I, too, am a very tidy person by nature and desire. Unfortunately my other self never seems to be quite able to live up to my own desires and ideals.
