Off to the Bedroom!

Thank you all for your comments about my choice of wallpapers for the living room. Now let's move on to the bedroom - the two will be swapped, and I want to have a "feature wall" (I've read somewhere that it is called that when you have one of the four walls in a room papered, or a mural painted on it) in the bedroom, too.

For more than six years now, my bedroom has looked pretty much like this (minus the Christmas decoration, of course, and don't think I usually leave bags on my bed):

You can see it has a very different colour scheme from the living room. In the first picture, if you look at the right side, you can see the vanilla yellow paint that covers three of the four walls in that room (Steve did that for me). Only the "head" wall is done in pale blue, and I'd like to stick to a similar colour scheme in my "new" bedroom.

The wallpaper I have chosen for that room is this one:

Looks familiar, doesn't it? Yes, it's exactly the same design as the first one of the three I've put before you in my previous post.

Call me boring, but I could even imagine having the same wallpaper in both rooms - the grey one in the living room, the light blue in the bedroom. As the furniture and colour schemes would still be very different from one room to the other, I don't think it would look boring at all.

Anyway, I think I've made my mind up; for the bedroom, anyway! As for the living room, I still need to think about it.

By the way, I'll have the papering done by a professional. The patterns have to be joined perfectly, and I know I won't be able to do that myself. Painting the walls and shifting the furniture will be done by me and a team of friends and family. But not before Easter :-)

  1. For the sake of your sanity, I think it is an excellent idea to get a professional to hang the wallpaper!

Blue is a very relaxing, peaceful shade...and a good choice for your bedroom, I think. :)

    1. Yes, Lee, I know I'd never get the pattern continuity right myself, and it would drive me mad having to look at it if it were any less than perfect :-)

  2. It will be fun to see it progress. I actually like the idea of having the same paper in different shades in the two rooms. I like the continuity of that.

    1. Me, too, Marcie! And as I said, the two rooms are otherwise totally different in character, it would not look boring.

    1. So do I, Donna. Along with yellow, it is my favourite colour.

  4. The blue paper will go very well with those blue walls. Now we have the 'before' pictures, we are looking forward to the 'after' ones.

    1. I'm afraid you'll have to wait at least a couple of months for the "after" pictures, Maggie.
The blue paper will not go where the blue wall is now, but in the room that is the living room at the moment. I have not yet decided whether I want the other three walls in my new bedroom pale blue or vanilla yellow.

  5. I may have missed it, but why are you changing your living/front room and your bedroom? Will this mean you enter your flat straight into your bedroom?

    1. No, Jill, when you enter my flat you first step into a tiny hallway that connects all the other rooms: Third Room to the right, current bedroom (future living room) next, then current living room (future bedroom), then my tiny bathroom and last but not least, the kitchen.

Two important reasons for swapping rooms: 1. noise from my neighbours, 2. smoke from my neighbours.
The noise I could deal with by using earplugs when necessary. But both the couple who live downstairs and the people next door smoke - either on the patio just below my bedroom window or on the balcony right next to it. I nearly always have my bedroom window open, and the smoke comes in all the time. I really hate it! The smoke does not reach as far as my current living room, though, and therefore it is going to be my new bedroom.

    2. I see. This makes perfect sense and I think your selection of wall paper is delightful and will make the rooms a happy place to be.

  6. That flower pattern does look good in both colour schemes, and I think blue is a very good colour for a bedroom. As someone already said, it's relaxing. Yellow on the other hand can be a good way of making a room look sunnier. I've had both blue and yellow bedrooms in the past - although not both colours together! In my present (very small) bedroom the wallpaper is in a discreet white-on-beige floral pattern and 'colour' determined by curtains (green) and bedlinen/blankets (...easier to change than the wallpaper...)

    1. There aren't any curtains in my flat, but I do of course change bedsheets, blankets and cushions.
The colours of my current bedroom (light blue on one wall, light yellow on the other three) I've liked and would still keep if it weren't for the "move".

  8. Oh good, I liked the wallpaper when you showed it for your living room, so I think it will look good in the bedroom, especially in blue!

  9. I love that wallpaper in pale blue! I can't wait to see all of your "after" pictures. It's too bad you have to switch rooms due to smokers. I hate the smell of cigarettes.

    1. Me too, Jennifer. My late husband used to smoke, too, but it didn't bother me that much then for two reasons: He rolled his own fags (they don't stink quite as much as the bought ones), and he didn't smoke in the bedrooms. Plus the windows were always open when he was smoking.

  10. This kind of transformation is so much fun....I really love that wallpaper in both of the iterations. I think it might be too much on all the walls, but it will be wonderful the way you will be doing it....Smoke! Oh, my. I would really hate that. Is your living room as quiet as your current bedroom?

    1. I think the same, Kristi - having the whole room papered in such a lively pattern would be too much.
My current living room / future bedroom is quieter, because it does not border the house next door. I live in a semi-detached house, and the new bedroom will be on the detached side of the building.

  11. I love the wallpaper in both colors! I also love the idea of using the same paper in two completely different color schemes. I can't wait to see what you choose!

    1. It's going to be the cherry blossoms in both rooms, blue for the bedroom and grey for the living room.

  12. I was in an open-air café this week and someone nearby must have been smoking and it struck me very forcibly just how much things have changed. The idea of smoke drifting up into my flat is beyond my imagination.

    1. My neighbours are not doing it to annoy me, but it DOES annoy me a great deal, and there is nothing I can do about it - nothing but move. Instead of moving house (which I am not even remotely considering, since the flat is my own and altogether perfect for me), I'll move rooms.
