Another Walk in the Snow

As opposed to Monday's walk (see previous post) in the snowy woods, where we really could not see very far due to the thick fog or mist (what's the difference?), Tuesday looked brighter. We spotted patches of blue in the sky and wanted to see what the fields, orchards, woodland and vineyards directly around the village looked like in the snow.

Off we went, and found some very beautiful play of sunlight and clouds.
The first set of pictures is as seen through the camera of my mobile phone:

This is what O.K.'s mobile phone camera made of the same route:

It was wonderful, and the only downside to it was that I knew I was going to have to board a train home a few hours later. By then it was dark, and I could not see the beautiful scenery from my place near the window. But I knew it was out there, and will be there next time - which will be soon!

  1. Looks like O.K. had slightly better weather than you did (more blue skies)... All the photos are lovely winter views, though! :)

    1. Well, I dare say my photos show the scenere more close to what it really looked like, not brightened up :-)

    1. It is a beautiful area, no matter the season, and I love going for walks and runs there with O.K.

  3. What beautiful places you have to walk in. Does it make you like winter a little more?

    1. It does indeed, Kristi! I think I've never enjoyed autumn and winter as much as I've done this season (so far). Ask me again at the end of February...

  4. I'm rather envious of your walk I have to admit. The photos are beautiful although the weather did, peculiarly, seem to be better for O.K. than for you. Strange that the cameras should interpret it so differently.

If you were serious about the difference between fog and mist I know that in the UK it is a question of visibility so far as the meteorological office is concerned. I suspect that the distance depends on the circumstances eg whether it is a walker, motorist or airline pilot who is asking the question as to whether it is foggy or misty. I shall go and find out.

    1. I was serious about the difference between fog and mist, Graham. Instinctively, I would think fog is denser than mist, limiting visibility more.

Yes, the camera on O.K.'s new phone seems to look more on the bright side of life than his old one (which is now mine) :-)

    2. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to come back to this Meike. There is a very good explanation on this website. In summary though the defining difference between mist and fog is visibility; if it is less than 1,000 metres we call it 'fog' and if visibility is greater than 1,000 metres we call it 'mist'.

    3. Thank you, Graham. Looks like I was on the right track, too. And on the walk before this one, it was definitely fog and not mist!

  5. Thank you!! We didn't get any snow today so I am thankful for these gorgeous pictures of the snow AND the skies!!
If you click on the photos, it makes them larger and I am happy I thought to do this as these photos really come to life when you enlarge them. :-)

    1. More snow here today, we are in Ludwigsburg and O.K. is a little worried about the long drive home. So am I, and I hope all will go well and he won't get caught in too much holiday return traffic. For many people in our area, a 2-week-period of vacation ends today.

When I write my posts and check them for spelling or other errors, I always go through the photos in enlarged mode, too. I usually click on photos on other people's blogs, too, and am always a teensy bit disappointed if they do not enlarge.

  6. I saw tracks on the road. One car, I'm guessing. You have the most amazing rural walks over there. All the photos are beautiful. In terms of enlarging pictures, when you are composing your post you can choose what size. I do extra large.

    1. I usually choose "medium", as I know they will enlarge anyway when you click on them.
Yes, there was the odd car about. People have allotments, vineyards and orchards there and sometimes store wood-cutting tools etc. in their sheds, and then go and pick them up or cut some wood to take home for the fireplace.

  7. Oh my goodness, what a beautiful walk. There is something magical about seeing the snow hanging, frozen, from the trees. It's rarely that cold here. Thank you for sharing your photos. x

  8. Oh my, you live in a wonderland. What beautiful snow pictures, I know you were just visiting there, but you are so lucky to be able to enjoy such beauty! We rarely if ever get ANY snow where I live, so I enjoy looking at others snow pics so much. It just looks like magic to me.

    1. It really is a beautiful part of the world there. I love my hometown and think we have some pretty nice corners, too, but it is different where O.K. lives and also quicker to be out of the village for a walk than out of town (I live near the center of my town).
Definitely magic! Especially if I can enjoy it like that, during a walk, and do not have to be out in it on my way to work :-)

  9. I commend your spirit to still walk in cold weather. I heard on Stephen Fry's show that fog is thicker than mist.

    1. Hello diane, am I right in thinking this is your first comment here? Welcome to my "Mental Library"!
Yes, I thought so; even by the sound of it, fog comes across as something dense, much heavier than mist.
I don't mind walking in cold weather when I am dressed accordingly. I just don't like waiting around at the train station when I am wearing a business outfit (plus winter coat, of course).

    1. Thank you for asking, Jennifer, you are so sweet!
Don't worry, I'm perfectly alright, just a little busy now that work has picked up again. I was getting used to having all that free time on my hands, what with two weeks off over Christmas and New Year :-)
Also, not much has been happening except for work, and a few more walks which you have already seen.
But I'm still very much around, and will soon post again.

  11. Absolutely wonderful. I wish I had seen this. Both of your pictures taken together show what a visual treat it was.
