End of August

The last part of August was still rather unsettled weather-wise, but the first part of September is turning out as beautiful as expected. On Friday, the 27th and on Tuesday, the 31st of August, my sister and I directed our after-work walks to Ludwigsburg's beautiful palace grounds and the deer park.

We love this time of year; the colours of the flowers and trees are so different to what it looks like in spring, and the afternoon and early evening light is just gorgeous.

When I arrived at my sister's that day to start our walk from her place, she had just finished making a batch of apricot jam. Not only is it very delicious (we love it with cheese), but it looked like apricot-coloured jewels against the light from the window. The photo doesn't really do it justice, but I've at least tried!

Now on to the deer park. It is usually rather busy on weekends, so we avoid it then. But on that Tuesday after work, it was just right, with a few people and many deer and sheep about.

I will tell you more about how beautifl September has started for me in my next post.

  1. Autumn can be lovely but it always has a sense of ending about it. Then, as it traditionally is the start of the new school year, a sense of looking for new beginnings. Nevertheless, I envy the Australian and NZ bloggers now showing pictures of the arrival of spring.

    1. The end of summer and approach of autumn always leaves me in two minds; there is the nostalgia, not wanting summer to end, but also the looking forward to the joys of autumn (and even of winter). The looking forward bit is made easier for me because we will go on a hiking holiday in the mountains later this month.

  2. The autumn light in your photos is gorgeous--as is the delicious looking apricot jam--my favorite. Delightful to have the kind of places to walk so close to you. Must say I prefer autumn over summer simply because our summers are brutally hot and humid. Imagine you are very eager for your hiking holiday.

    1. Over the past years, our summers were brutally hot, too, and far too dry. But not so this year, and so I am very happy for the sunny days we are having now.
After my enforced break of 6 weeks, I have now been back at work for several weeks and am already ready for a holiday - it shouldn't be like that, should it!

    1. Yes, you mentioned that on your blog, and I am glad that there is at least that to get some counter balance against the crazy times and place you're in.

  4. I would love to have palace grounds to walk in plus a sister to join me!!!!
The jam is beautiful - I love apricots - my mum made jars of it when I was a child but I've never made it because fresh apricots are hard to get here and cost a fortune!
Glad you have another holiday planned - wish I could hike still, right now with my pulled muscle I'm having a hard time just around the garden!!!
    Enjoy the weekend Meike.

    1. My sister bought the apricots; I don't know what they cost here at the moment, but with our good range of shops and farmers markets around here, we are really spoiled for choice.
Yes, I know how fortunate I am in living where I do, and with my family so close by!

    1. The palace grounds and deer park are what make this town a beautiful place to live, I have known them since my earliest childhood and never tire of either.
My sister's apricot jam is wonderful! I love eating fruit just "as is", too; for instance, plums or cherries picked straight from the tree are the best!

  6. Your photos are lovely! And that apricot jam! That looks so very good.
My brother sent me two kinds of jam this summer and I find they are very good swirled into some Greek yogurt! Hope you are doing well!

    1. The apricot jam is as wonderful as it looks, Kay!
I seem to remember you mentioned your brother's jam gift either on your blog or in an email to me. Good idea to swirl it into Greek yogurt.
I hope YOU are doing well, too.

    1. It has only recently been restored (the facade); like all such buildings, it needs constant attention!

    1. Thanks, Derek! I took the selfie the day after my first eye OP back in June; I will not go back to colouring my hair again and so that's what it looks like now.

    1. Neither do we, and it really bothered me when the gates were shut for months because of the pandemic.
