Thursdays are market days in Ripon, and we were there to stock up on fruit and veg as well as bread. There is hardly anything you can not find at the market; from gift wrapping paper to nightgowns to shampoo, from handbags to batteries to pet supplies - it is all there. Many people were about, but not so many as to make it feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
At lunchtime, we went to the cathedral for a free lunchtime concert (donations are welcome, expected and entirely appropriate). Refreshments in the shape of homemade sandwiches, tea and coffee were offered, and everybody was welcome to find a seat, relax, eat and drink and chat before the concert began.
Originally, a violinist had been scheduled for that day, but she was ill so a lady playing the harp stood in for her - and although of course I am sorry for the violinist being ill, I am glad we had the harp! It was simply wonderful, so fitting to the place and its atmosphere! You could have heard a pin drop while she played.
She announced and briefly explained every piece, and those 50 minutes will remain in my memory forever. The harpist‘s name is Lucinda Taylor, and she played works by Handel, Andres, Albeniz, Lauridsen, Britten, Woods, Rodgers, Pachelbel, Nichols and Queen.
After a quiet first half of the afternoon at the cottage, we went for a walk along the river (Skell), where I took the following pictures.
My sister and I split up at one point, me walking on to my mother-in-law and my sister going home to start on our evening meal.
Another good day all around.
You and your sister sure know how to have fun together! Looks like a wonderful day!
