The Hottest Day

Tuesday of this week was, as most of you will know, the hottest day on record. Even here in North Yorkshire we had 38 to 39 Celsius (information based on the weather app on my phone as well as Look North, a local news program on TV).

What to do on such an extremely hot day? Not much, that‘s for sure! As we are on holiday, we can of course do as we please, which makes things much easier.

We left the house straight after breakfast and walked to the cathedral, being among the earliest visitors for that day. The huge old building with its thick stone walls kept relatively cool inside, which was exactly why we chose that time for our first proper visit of this holiday.

The Saxon crypt now has a light and sound installation. The need for such installations is debatable, but in this case, we watched and listened, and quite liked it.
We also looked at all the information, drawings and maps of a proposed new community building next to the cathedral, something we are certainly going to follow with interest over the months and years to come.

The tourist information was our next stop; we like to browse the little shop with Ripon and Yorkshire themed items, and look at the leaflets and books for inspiration. Much to our pleasure, a lady we‘d met years before was on duty - and she remembered us!! We had a nice long chat with her, and she wrote down directions for us for our planned trip to Newby Hall next week.

After that, we went into one or two shops before stopping once more at Oliver‘s Pantry for lunch. Almost all afternoon was dedicated to a nice long siesta - really hardly anything else we could do. Many shops closed early that day, and of those that were still open, several had set up trestle tables outside their front doors with paper cups and jugs of water for any passers-by.

Clouds and the shade of trees were making our garden the best place for our tea, consisting again of salad, savoury pastry from the baker on the market square and a glass of well chilled rosé.

Some time after 8:00 pm, we set off on a brief evening stroll around the block. Sleep was hard to find that night, with our rooms being very warm and the old sash windows only opening about half way up. But again - being on holiday means one can have a nap in the afternoon, so losing a few hours of sleep during the night is not really a problem.

  1. I don't think it will be any cooler laid on one's back on the pavement, especially if one is covered in fur. I love Ripon cathedral - my nearest now I have long left Lincoln. Before covid they had superb art exhibition every year. I think they have started again this year.

    1. There is always something going on at Ripon cathedral, and even more so now that they are celebrating a big anniversary (sorry, I have forgotten how many years - 1,300 or something).
Those cats had probably been indoors all day and came out only when it was a little cooler - down to 28 instead of 38C!

  2. Thoughtful of people to put our cold drinks for passersby during the heatwave. Reminds me of the 'lemonade stands' youngsters often set up outside their homes during the hot summer holidays. A small charge for a paper cup of chilled lemonade which many take advantage of, stopping their cars and grabbing a refreshing drink, and the children enjoy it and usually donate at least part of their taking to a charity which is hopefully teaching them a lot about helping others less fortunate.
Glad to hear you are having fun.

    1. I‘ve never seen any shop in Germany offering free water to passers-bys, only inside for their own customers. Also, kids in Germany don‘t set up lemonade stands, but they can often be seen having mini jumble sales, getting rid of some of their own ols toys to buy new ones with whatever money they make.

  3. I am enjoying your Yorkshire holiday so much, visiting places that I know well. My parents lived just up the road in Coverdale. Have you seen the tv film by Alan Bennett called 'A Day Out'? It is about an Edwardian cycling club who visit Fountains Abbey. It is absolutely charming, and also rather sad.

Thank you for the film tip! I shall certainly try to find it online, on Netflix or Apple TV.

  5. A morning visit to an old cathedral seems just the right thing on an extremely hot day :)
I've been reading your previous Yorkshire posts earlier in the week but without commenting as I too found myself in "anonymous" state. Just struggled with that again, but then noticed the text "Comment as: ---" ... And found my way back to being logged in. At least on this device. For now. How long it will last, remains to be seen! :)

    1. Nice to see you back to your old self, Monica 😁
Yes, the cathedral was a good place to be that day. Actually, it is always a good place to be!

  6. I smiled at the. idea of it being so hot that you couldn't sleep. I haven't even changed to my summer duvet yet and yesterday it was so chilly first thing that the central heating automatically came on!

    1. By Friday, things had changed around completely - I was back to wearing long sleeves, and it was so chilly in our front room that we went outside to warm up. Sleep has been much easier since!
